Earlier today WWE announced that John Cena will not compete in tonight’s Royal Rumble match.

The WWE posted an update later this afternoon stating that John Cena’s replacement tonight will be Braun Strowman.

Strowman was advertised to face Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal Championship, but was replaced with Finn Balor following an angle where Strowman destroyed Vince McMahon’s limousine.

This announcement was most likely the plan all along, as the WWE never intended to have Strowman vs. Braun at the event, despite advertising it for weeks. The WWE also didn’t have plans for John Cena to compete tonight, yet also advertised his appearance.
