Las Vegas is one of the most unique places on earth and is most certainly the home of combat sports. From huge boxing bouts to the base for the UFC these days, nothing beats a fight night in the city. And that applies to wrestling too…
Sin City knows how to do events, and down the years thousands of fans have taken a break from their slot games and feasting on buffets to enjoy some world-class action.
There have been many events in Vegas down the years, but what are the best? We take a look at the top five wrestling events to grace the Las Vegas Strip…
WrestleMania IX, 1993
Of course, we have to start with WrestleMania IX back in 1993. Taking place at Caesars Palace, it had a Roman-theme and included some epic bouts, most notably Yokozuna beating Bret Hart for the Championship.
What followed saw Hulk Hogan enter the ring to take on Yokozuna, then winning the title himself and producing some of the most iconic scenes in WWE history.
WCW Halloween Havoc, 1997
Sadly, WCW is no longer with us, but in 1997 the MGM Grand Garden Arena was packed with fans to watch a 60-person battle royale. Entitled World War 3, it was a great way to celebrate Halloween, to the backdrop of a spooky Strip and many other events going on in the city.
It was chaotic, thrilling and one of the very finest WCW events of all time.
AEW Double or Nothing, 2019
Over 20 years later, AEW lit up the Strip, welcoming a new era to main event wrestling. There have been a few events that has suggested AEW has arrived on the big stage, and this was certainly one of them. Double or Nothing offered up some incredibly moments, including the surprise appearance of Jon Moxley, as well as a brilliant win for Adam Page as the very first AEW World Champion.
WWE Money in the Bank, 2016
Money in the Bank saw a thrilling ladder match in which at the very top of it was a contract that guaranteed a Championship bout. It saw the jackpots of Vegas essentially enter the ring, and with high-stakes, we of course got a brilliant match.
We saw Dean Ambrose take the Heavyweight Championship, and one of the most exciting and unique events ever to grace the WWE.
Impact Wrestling Bound for Glory, 2013
Taking place at Sam’s Town in 2013, Bound for Glory proved to be an excellent event in one of Vegas’ more intimate venues. The Monster Ball match was the standout, a hardcore bout that saw the likes of Samoa Joe, Jeff Hardy and Abyss go head-to-head in a no holds barred event.
It was an unforgettable night and an atmosphere like no other wrestling event has seen in the city.
