UFC 285 will see the return of the UFC Light-heavyweight legend Jon Jones as he takes on former title challenger Cyril Gane. After Francis Ngannou’s departure from the UFC following contract negotiation failures, fans were quite disappointed at the aspect of never getting to see the two clash together. This new Jon Jones vs Ciryl Gane matchup is still expected to be a banger to end up causing fans buzz to have an eye on sport live scores and Middleweight Robert Whittaker is just as excited as others.
During a recent interview, Robert was asked about the upcoming PPV event’s main card. The Aussie had a clear pick, “Jon Jones is going to take (Gane) down and lay on him and just finish him there, “Jones’ wrestling is next-caliber. Nobody comes close to what Jon Jones can produce in the octagon, and this is my opinion.”
He tried to strengthen his statements arguing, “If you look at his statistics, he can take people down with ease. He can grapple them with ease. He can strike with the best of them. He’s got cardio and strength and power and height and physique. He has it all. And Jones probably has the highest IQ in the game. He can see a weakness and he’ll exploit it.”
“Jon Jones is the best of all time.” Rob Whittaker reacts to Jon Jones’ return announcement
Is Robert Whittaker right about Jon Jones vs Ciryl Gane?
Let’s go back to the first Francis Ngannou vs Stipe Miocic fight. Dana White was describing Francis as a punching powerhouse who hits like a literal speeding truck and Stipe was sitting with the belt as the underdog. All that big talk didn’t help ‘The Predator’ who lost the match badly. Then in their rematch, it was Ngannou who came in rather silent showed incredible takedown defense, and defeated Miocic.
On the Cameroonian’s first title defense, Cyril Gane was a favorite for many. And during the initial stages of the fight, ‘Bon Gamin’ appeared to be winning. Until of course, Francis pulled out his surprise wrestling moves and managed to defeat Gane via decision.
So going into this fight, Cyril has probably practiced his takedown defenses knowing the caliber of groundwork Jon brings. The Frenchman is considered the better striker and more flexible in his movements despite the huge size.
We are not writing Jones off, but Gane has a very strong chance to finally get his hands on the belt come March 4th.
