Vince McMahon Made Last Minute Change To Match

WWE left fans with a cliffhanger following the RAW Women’s Championship match at Sunday’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view.

During the finish of the match, Asuka attempted to spray green mist in Sasha Banks’ eyes, but inadvertently hit the referee instead. This allowed Sasha Banks to pin Asuka, with Bayley counting three wearing the referee’s shirt.

According to Dave Meltzer on the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, the original plans for the match had Asuka retaining the RAW Women’s Championship.

The change was a last minute decision from Vince McMahon in an effort to increase RAW viewership. The thought is McMahon hopes fans will tune in to Monday’s episode to find out what’s next for their feud after last night’s cliffhanger.

“Vince changed his mind, I think it was the day of the show, basically it was a last minute change.”

Last week’s RAW set record low numbers, with an average viewership of 1.56 million viewers. WWE will also present Randy Orton vs. Big Show in an “unsanctioned match” on Monday’s episode.

WWE.com still lists Asuka as RAW Women’s Champion.
