WWE recently signed a five-year deal with NBC’s Peacock streaming service to migrate WWE Network’s content over to Peacock for fans in the United States.
Last week, PWInsider noted that Peacock had removed multiple matches and promos from various WWE events upon uploading them to their platform.
One of the pieces of content removed from the platform was the promo and match between Rowdy Roddy Piper and Bad News Brown at WrestleMania 6. This was due to Piper painting himself black for the event. Another item removed was Vince McMahon calling John Cena the N-word during the Survivor Series 2005 pay-per-view.
The Hollywood Reporter recently reported ”the NBCUniversal-owned streaming service is reviewing all 17,000 hours of WWE content to ensure it aligns with Peacock’s standards and practices. WWE is also being made aware of any edits.”
The New York Times reached out to both Peacock and WWE for statements regarding the edits, in which both parties replied mentioning why the content has been removed.
NBC said that they are “reviewing WWE content to ensure it aligns with Peacock’s standards and practices.”
“Peacock and WWE are reviewing all past content to ensure it fits our 2021 standards,”WWE said.
Prior to the move, Peacock had stated that the full WWE Network library would be uploaded to their service by SummerSlam 2021. WWE Network content began to show up on Peacock on March 18th, however, subscribers in the United States won’t have to swap to Peacock until April 4th when the old WWE Network will shut down. The change doesn’t affect anyone outside of the US.
