Rey Mysterio Continues To Work Without Contract

WWE will be presenting at least two pre-taped matches at its Extreme Rules pay-per-view later this month. This first being the Swamp Fight, which was reportedly taped this week, and the second an “Eye For An Eye” match pitting Seth Rollins vs. Rey Mysterio.

Dave Meltzer noted in the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE plans on using CGI effects to simulate an actual eye being extracted, to determine a winner of the match.

The idea is to do a taped match and use some form of CGI effects to simulate an eye being pulled out as the finish.

At this point, Rey Mysterio is still working without a contract, and could technically sign with another company. The report suspects that if Mysterio agrees to a new deal, he may not lose the match, but would involve Seth Rollins having to wear an eyepatch for sometime.

If Mysterio does not agree to a new deal, they could write him off television until he decides to either sign a new deal, or go elsewhere.

The suspicion is that if he does sign a new deal, he shouldn’t lose this match, but that would require Rollins to take time off and wear an eyepatch until some sort of magical fixture storyline comes into play. If he doesn’t sign, it would make sense for this to be his blow-off as it has been months.

The original storyline that Mysterio lost sight in one eye was a way to write him off television. WWE issued a kayfabe statement indicating he was at risk for infection following an attack by Seth Rollins.

The whole original storyline talking about an infection which was then dropped, and potentially losing his sight in the eye was a way to write him out, and I guess make it appear to WWE fans that if he shows up elsewhere that he’s medically unfit and the other company is sleazy for putting a guy with a medical condition out there.

Both parties have had negotiations to strike a new deal, but WWE declined Mysterio’s request for a raise. Vince McMahon told him that no new raises were offered, and mentioned the fact that several wrestlers were cut from the roster. Mysterio didn’t accept that reasoning, knowing that WWE is expected to hit record profits due to their television deals with USA and Fox.
