Professional wrestling legend Danny Hodge has passed away at the age of 88.

His granddaughter, Stacy Ewy Wilson confirmed the news on Facebook Saturday morning.

Danny Hodge, my amazing Grandfather, passed away on Christmas Eve. To say I am heartbroken is an understatement. šŸ˜­ This man was my hero….my everything! I have so many great memories and am so truly blessed God gave us such a wonderful man to lead our family. I have never met anyone more thankful, humble and kind than my grandfather. Christmas was his favorite time of year! This year while we are hurting…Grandpa is experiencing the ultimate Christmas with our God. I have no doubt that he will receive his ā€œjob well doneā€. I love each of you and appreciate all of your kind words. Danny Hodge was a renowned amateur wrestler in the 50s, being undefeated in his collegiate career with the University of Oklahoma. He was the first amaetur wrestler to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated.

He made his pro-wrestling debut in 1959 after training under Leroy McGuirk and Ed “Strangler” Lewis. We went on to win the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship seven times. Hodge made two appearances in WWE, honoring fellow Oklahoma native Jim Ross.

Hodge was honored with various pro wrestling accolades, including Cauliflower Alley Club Art Abrams Lifetime Achievement Award, Lou Thesz Award ,George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame Class of 2000, Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum Class of 2007. He was set to be inducted into theĀ International Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame class of 2021.
