SmackDown Star Expected To Undergo Character Change

Following the 2020 WWE Draft, The New Day faction has split, with Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods working on Monday Night RAW, and Big E remaining on Friday Night SmackDown.

During Kofi and Xavier’s absence, Big E was continuing to represent the group, and was pushed as a top singles competitor on the blue brand.

In the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted future plans for Big E, now that he has been separated from the group. The report indicates Big E is set to become a more serious singles competitor, and abandon his comedic role

“The idea is to get Big E away from the act and make him more serious for a singles push. Meltzer stated. “Historically, WWE has broken up tag team acts in the draft before and while there are exceptions, most of the time they find out the combination of parts was more effective than the parts individually.”

The idea is to get him out of the comedic mode. There is a logic to it even though, because the New Day has been established together for so many years and have been popular, there was going to be a negative reaction breaking them up without a storyline leading to it.

It’s not known whether Big E’s character will be similar to when he worked as a singles act from 2012 – 2014. During his singles run he he captured the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

The New Day worked their “farewell” match during this week’s edition of Friday Night SmackDown against Sheamus, Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura.
