Throwback SmackDown Special Came As ‘Total Surprise’ To Many

It was announced that next week’s episode of SmackDown will be a ‘throwback’ show, and whilst a commercial was shown during last week’s episode, nothing else was announced for the show.

WWE has done similar episodes to this for Raw over the past few years, with RAW Reunion featuring dozens of legends from several eras of WWE. Whilst it’s unclear to what could happen during next week’s show, Ringside News has revealed the backstage reaction to the announcement of the episode.

The report noted that the announcement was a ‘total surprise’ among the WWE Crew backstage. They were also not given any information on the show, other than that they’ll be updated sometime next week.

The nostalgic episode is likely WWE’s latest attempt to grab a large viewership amid a constantly decreasing viewership, which isn’t just affecting SmackDown, but also WWE’s flagship show, Raw.

The commercial for the episode began with an old-fashioned television turning on, which displayed a reel of current WWE Superstars such as current SmackDown Women’s Champion Bianca Belair, The Miz, Sasha Banks, and Big E, as well as several shots of fans from old WWE shows.

Only one match has been revealed for the show so far, which is a rematch from WrestleMania, Seth Rollins vs Cesaro. We will also likely see the fallout from Roman Reigns vs Daniel Bryan last week, which saw Bryan get banished from the blue brand, along with more build towards May 16th’s WrestleMania Backlash.
