WWE has announced their first full-time African American referee.

Independent star Aja Smith, known to wrestling fans as Aja Perera recently signed a contract with WWE, and began training at the Performance Center this week.

Aja was at a WWE Tryout in December 2019, and offered a contract shortly after.

Smitha is a native of Brazil, who currently resides outside Atlanta, GA. She debuted in 2013, and has worked various independent promotions including Shimmer, Canadian Wrestling Elite, and Lucha Libre Femenil.

She held the SHINE Tag Team Championship with current All Elite Wrestling wrestler Big Swole.

Smith will be replacing referee Jessika Carr, who has moved from NXT to the SmackDown brand.
