Despite not being under contract with WWE, discussions have taken place regarding a possible opponent for Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 37.
Lesnar, who last competed at Wrestlemania 36, has yet to re-sign with the company, following his contract expiring shortly after the event. Earlier this week, Brock Lesnar’s WWE merchandise contract expired, resulting in WWE pulling all stock from its WWEShop online store.
Lesnar’s WWE contract allows the company to continue to sell merchandise for a specified period of time, in this case it was five months.
Dave Meltzer provided some insight on the situation in the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, including discussions on a possible opponent for Lesnar at Wrestlemania 37.
The belief right now is that WWE would have Lesnar return at a Saudi Arabian pay-per-view or Wrestlemania. WWE had scheduled an event in Saudi Arabia later this year, but that does not appear to be happening due to the current health crisis.
Brock Lesnar’s name has been mentioned during Wrestlemania 37 discussions, with his opponent being Drew McIntyre in a Wrestlemania 36 rematch. This would mean McIntyre would have the title up until next March, but there was been talk of having Orton win the title.
“It was said that for Lesnar, like for Tyson Fury (who issued a challenge to Drew McIntyre this past week for a match), that it’s at this point Saudi Arabia and WrestleMania as the only shows that make sense right now and the belief right now is Saudi Arabia won’t happen this year. Lesnar’s name had been talked about in WWE in reference to a Drew McIntyre rematch for this coming WrestleMania, but that was if McIntyre was to retain the title, which has also been considered to go to Randy Orton, who in theory would be earmarked for Edge and not Lesnar. But nothing in that direction is close to being decided.”
AEW founder Tony Khan recently was asked about Brock Lesnar during an AEW media call, he stated he couldn’t speak on him. The belief is WWE would only offer Lesnar a contract right away to keep him away from AEW, but the amount of money Brock would want wouldn’t be ideal for AEW.
Lesnar could use AEW as a bargaining chip to get a more lucrative deal from WWE, which he has done with UFC in the past.
One person in the company noted that it makes no sense to sign Lesnar to a new deal at the moment, as it would only be to keep him from AEW. The belief is Lesnar could, and probably would try to use AEW as leverage, but that at the end of the day, the belief is Lesnar’s value to AEW would be nowhere near his price tag and a deal with Lesnar makes no sense for a company basically trying to just break even during the pandemic.
