News broke yesterday that Impact Stars Sonjay Dutt and Abyss are both leaving the company. An internal e-mail was sent with well wishes for all they have done during their time in Impact.
Dave Meltzer reports in the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter that both Dutt and Abyss will likely have backstage roles within the company, and will not be wrestling.
Dutt received an offer to work backstage at NXT, which when presented to Impact, they decided to let him out of his contract early. Dutt’s contract was set to expire in September.
Abyss had been working in an office position backstage with Impact, making limited wrestling appearances.
Jeremy Borash, who the WWE has working behind the scenes at NXT, is likely the connection that tied Abyss and Sonjay to the WWE.
Impact Wrestling President Ed Nordholm released a statement to Wrestling Inc. confirming the departures of both Sonjay Dutt and Abyss.
“We reached an amicable agreement with Sonjay and Abyss to allow them to pursue this opportunity. They have been tremendous contributors to IMPACT Wrestling and we wish them every success. We are thrilled that Konnan and Tommy Dreamer have agreed to bring their 50+ years of experience to our core creative team.”
