Cena’s participation at tonight’s event was in question after the WWE stated he was injured at the hands of Drew McIntyre on RAW two weeks ago.
The WWE claims he aggravated his ankle while working out prior to RAW this past Monday.
In reality, Cena is not injured, and plans for him to be at the Royal Rumble was never the plan according to Dave Meltzer at The Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
The WWE advertised John Cena, similar to Brock Lesnar vs. Braun Strowman, which was promoted to sell tickets.
John Cena is planning on filming his next movie beginning on 2/4 outside of Vancouver, BC.
The original plan was for John Cena to be injured by Lars Sullivan, which would setup a program between the two of them in the future, and keep him off the card.
The WWE was testing John Cena’s titantron yesterday, but that could simply be a/v tests for production purposes.
