Over recent months, WWE was seemingly heading towards a match between Mustafa Ali and Kofi Kingston at WrestleMania, however, this obviously hasn’t happened.
Their storyline dates back to Elimination Chamber 2019, when Mustafa Ali’s injury took him out of the Chamber match, leading to Kofi Kingston taking his place and winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania.
Mustafa Ali called out Kofi Kingston for stealing his place during an episode of Raw earlier this year, and despite The New Day and Retribution feuding for several weeks, plans took an abrupt turn when The New Day won the Raw Tag Team Championships and entered a program with AJ Styles and Omos.
Speaking with Metro UK, Mustafa Ali himself thought he would be getting the WrestleMania match against Kingston this year.
‘Again, like I said, things change and other things take priority sometimes. We almost got to it, so I will try to get to it again. There’s so much real emotion that I can just bring up and bring out in promos leading to that match.”
‘When we do do it, I hope we’re allowed to do it right because I feel like it’d be one hell of a story.’
Whilst it was never revealed whether Mustafa Ali would have gone onto the success Kingston did at WrestleMania if he didn’t get injured prior to Elimination Chamber, the star knew that he was set for some sort of a push.
“KofiMania’s something that had been 11, 12 years in the making. So there was no way to measure up to that, and in the end of the day it was fate that took over. I don’t know what the plans were going into WrestleMania, I can only speculate. But, what I do know is that the plans were to set me up as the next breakout star going into the Elimination Chamber.”
WWE has been known over recent years to completely squash matches for unknown reasons, and this just seems like another instance of that happening.
