Edge has earned himself an unmatched SummerSlam record via his big win over Seth Rollins at the aforementioned PPV on Saturday. The Rated-R Superstar has won more SummerSlam matches than any other wrestler in WWE history, only losing twice at the event.
This past weekend was a pretty huge one for wrestling, with CM Punk making his return in a debut for AEW at Rampage on Friday. WWE had their eye-catching moments as well, getting John Cena back in the ring in a great bout against Roman Reigns that was followed up by the shocking return of Brock Lesnar.
Edge’s match against Rollins was one fans would have hoped to see for a while and it certainly lived up to the billing. The former went through a pretty lengthy absence brought on by a worrying neck injury and his return was marred by a torn triceps muscle during a match against Randy Orton at WrestleMania 36 last year.
When it comes to SummerSlam, though, Edge can boast wrestling at 14 such PPVs, which leaves him at fourth with regards to all-time appearances. That’s telling in itself as eight SummerSlams occurred during his WWE hiatus – he was also recovering from surgery when last year’s show came around. As pointed out by The Internet Wrestling Database, Edge has a 12-2 record at SummerSlam. He is only two appearances off the No.1 spot in terms of appearances, with Orton (16), The Undertaker (16), and John Cena (15) ahead of him.
While he hasn’t been able to rack up the appearances, through no fault of his own, he’s still been able to pile the wins together and only Taker comes close with 10 wins at the event. Should The Deadman stay retired, he won’t be making any improvements on his SummerSlam Stats. Orton caught up to him on Saturday, making a 16th appearance. The Viper’s Tag team Title win means he’s only won half of his showings and is still four wins behind The Rated-R Superstar.
Ironically, Rollins seems like the man with the biggest chance of surpassing Edge’s record. Sure, he’s only won six of his eight appearances but one can well imagine he’ll be around long after Edge is gone. He’s only posted two losses, similarly to Edge, and could possibly reach an identical record within the next six years. There will be odds on SummerSlam running every year and readers could check out Youwager for any future wrestling bets.
As for the match itself, Edge had been looking to humble the younger star, who was looking to bring an end to the veteran’s legacy. The match, seven years in the making, brought out the best from both wrestlers but Edge would avoid the trademark Stomp to get his opponent to submit on the night.
Rollins had made eliminating Edge a priority as he reckons the latter is standing in his way of making his way back to holding the Universal Title. Edge eliminated Rollins to win the Royal Rumble earlier this year and Rollins would get his revenge at Money in the Bank last month by interfering in his Universal title match. Edge, of course, was none too pleased with Rollins’ actions and showed every bit of his anger at SummerSlam.
Just a night removed from ruining Rollins white suit with a “Broodbath,” Edge kept up the mind games by walking out to his classic, fiery Brood entrance at the Allegiant Stadium on Saturday night. Rollins did not find it funny in the least and targeted the veteran’s surgically repaired neck from the get-go.
“Edge showed a recklessness the WWE Universe hasn’t seen from him since his improbable in-ring return in 2020,” WWE’s report on the match reads. “A top-rope swinging neckbreaker showed that Edge was willing to risk it all to punish Rollins.
“Rollins once again went for a Stomp, but Edge dodged. Rollins then set up for a Pedigree, but Edge countered with a Glam Slam — a tribute to his wife, fellow WWE Hall of Famer Beth Phoenix. He followed up with a Spear through the ropes, sending both competitors flying to the ringside floor.
“When the action returned to the ring, Rollins yet again went for the Stomp, but Edge blocked it and locked in a crossface. After Rollins escaped from the crossface, Edge became incensed, repeatedly smashing his opponent’s face into the mat before locking in a sleeperhold to tap out Rollins.
“Edge never forgot when Rollins tried to end him seven years ago, and now, Rollins will never forget when The Rated-R Superstar tapped him out in front of 51,326.”
Edge will hope to add a few more wins to his record but Rollins could be made to catch up before that happens as he’s the only threat. Cena is only 5-10 while Triple H is unlikely to improve on his 8-5 record. Bret Hart is close at 7-4 but that he will never get to 12 hardly needs explaining.
