Jon Moxley has returned to New Japan Pro Wrestling, and he already has a Wrestle Kingdom 21 match waiting for him.
According to Sportskeeda, Moxley made his return to NJPW for the first time since 2024 at Power Struggle on November 3 in Hiroshima, Japan. He teamed with Wheeler Yuta as part of The Death Riders to take on Shingo Takagi and Jeff Cobb of Unbound Co.
Unbound Co. won the match, with Cobb pinning Yuta after the Tour of the Islands. The loss marked a tough return for Moxley, but the story did not end there. After the match, Takagi challenged Moxley to a singles match at Wrestle Kingdom 21 on January 4 at the Tokyo Dome.
Moxley is the AEW Continental Champion, and he is in the middle of a major AEW feud with The Cut heading into Blood and Guts and Full Gear. His NJPW return adds another date to an already busy schedule, and it puts him back in front of a Japanese crowd for the first time in more than two years.
Moxley’s previous NJPW appearance saw him retain the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship against EVIL at Dominion in 2024. Since then, he has been focused on AEW, where he leads The Death Riders.
The closing angle at Power Struggle also involved Gabe Kidd, who retained the IWGP Global Heavyweight Championship against Taichi. After that match, Kidd laid out Hiroshi Tanahashi, Yuya Uemura attacked Kidd, Moxley attacked Uemura, and Takagi tried to make the save before Kidd and Moxley laid him out as well. Moxley warned NJPW that The Death Riders will be at the Tokyo Dome.
For now, the Wrestle Kingdom match is set in principle. Takagi issued the challenge, and Moxley’s closing promo pointed to the January 4 date. A stipulation for the match has not been confirmed yet.
