The biggest fight of the year is finally on the horizon.
The catchweight bout between Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis and Ryan Garcia will settle one of the freshest rivalries in boxing – at least until a potential rematch.
For now though, Saturday sees the unbeaten duo step into the ring in Las Vegas, Nevada.

There are a significant amount of unknowns for both fighters heading into this fight. Can Davis take a punch? Will his low punch output early on in the fight cost him late? How will Garcia deal with constant pressure? If he was knocked down by Luke Campbell, will he be able to get up if he’s hit by Davis?
Considering that both are relatively young and have never faced an opponent quite like the individual they’ll be standing across from on April 22, it’s really difficult to figure out how this fight will play out. It could be an early knockout by Garcia or a late stoppage by Davis. It could go to the scorecards, but that really feels unlikely considering both fighters have a penchant for putting their opponents on the canvas.
Instead, it’s worth analyzing the underrated aspects of their respective skills.
For Davis, it’s his boxing ability. Despite being the smaller fighter, he has excellent twitch reflexes and upper body movement that has routinely found a path for him to navigate inside and set up his power punches. Although he has sledgehammers for fists, they mean nothing if he’s unable to set up his power shots. The way he manages his offense has left plenty of opponents unable to get their offense into a rhythm out of fear of getting caught. However, Davis has been touched by plenty of his opponents who don’t possess the hand speed or accuracy of Garcia.
Garcia’s use of height and reach has helped him maintain his unbeaten record as a pro. Under the watchful eye of trainer Joe Goossen, Garcia has unlocked more tools to use offensively while his 5’10” frame and 70-inch reach have paralyzed smaller opponents. People have made a lot of Garcia being dropped by Campbell two years ago, but as well as being a 2012 Olympic gold medalist, Campbell could match Garcia for height.
Davis being a -225 favorite is a bit too wide for my liking despite his penchant for detonating bombs on his opponents and Garcia not being known as much of a defensive fighter. Garcia at +188 is tantalizing but it’s the Garcia by stoppage at +300 that draws my interest. Garcia enjoys opponents that come toward him because it sets up his lightning-fast counter left hand that has set many opponents on their backside. Davis is aware that the punch is coming but he’s going to have to take risks to get inside. Because of that reason, the value is in Garcia by stoppage and is where your money is best placed in this truly unpredictable showdown.
