WWE made a number of cuts to the NXT roster earlier this week, including Alexander Wolfe, whose contract was expiring and not renewed.

Wolfe joined WWE in 2015, before becoming a member of NXT’s SAnitY one year later. The group saw success in NXT, becoming NXT Tag Team Champions. However shortly after making their SmackDown debuts, the group disappeared from television before coming back as singles wrestlers across all of WWE’s brands.

Wolfe, now known as Axel ‘The Axeman’ Tischer, recently saw down with Sport1 to discuss his time with WWE, and his plans for the future.

The former NXT Tag Team Champion started by revealing that he wasn’t actually released from WWE, instead, the company decided to not renew his contract.

‘Well, I got a call from WWE on Wednesday saying they didn’t want my contract to be extended. It wasn’t officially a dismissal because my contract expires on June 15th. From then on I am no longer a wrestler for World Wrestling Entertainment.’

‘Strangely, it hit me less hard than I expected. I’m quite relaxed and happy, I don’t feel like pitying myself. First of all, I am generally a positive person, secondly, I can look back on six wonderful years at WWE with great and unique experiences, thirdly, I have had a plan B for a long time, which I am now tackling – and I also have little time to complain about it. because I have to organize a big move within four weeks, move furniture, cancel subscriptions, all the trimmings. It goes on and I am in good spirits that I can now apply everything I have learned elsewhere, where it is just as valued – maybe even more.’

When asked about his accomplishments in WWE, Wolfe replied stating that he thinks he could have done more with the company, however doesn’t look down on it too much.

‘You could have made a lot more of it, definitely, especially because I don’t think the story has been told out for a long time, I thought it was funny to hear now that I can’t stay. But there will be reasons why the decision-makers have decided this now. Maybe there was not enough interest in the audience that you wanted to reach, maybe someone was of the opinion that it was not going in the right direction. It’s a shame, but can’t be changed.’

‘The reason I was given was the pandemic time that savings are still necessary due to the global event restrictions. Well, that’s better than no reason at all, but ultimately you know: WWE makes so much money that no layoff is really mandatory. But it is what it is. A number of former WWE talents released in the past year have popped up over on IMPACT Wrestling, AEW, and other promotions. Wolfe revealed if he plans on doing the same, or if he’s looking down a different route.

‘We’ll see where it goes, whether I can get a permanent contract elsewhere or whether I am orienting myself towards independent wrestling and pursuing other projects. Due to appearing on both NXT and NXT UK, Wolfe has had to move between the US and the UK several times. Wolfe now looks to be focusing on the German wrestling scene.

‘Basically, for family reasons, the plan is to return to Germany – now probably earlier than planned, unless something else comes up. But sooner or later it becomes clear to me: As beautiful as the USA is, I don’t want to live there forever. My home is closer to me and I also want my two-year-old son to grow up in Germany. I want to continue wrestling in America or other parts of the world, offering wrestling seminars and discovering the world and other cultures a little more as soon as I can again – I even have a lot of inquiries, for example from Romania, deepest Transylvania, a lot exciting. But above all, it is important to me to pass on my knowledge and experience to the German wrestling scene.’

Wolfe finished by giving his thoughts on potentially opening a wrestling school in the future, which is something various wrestlers such as Seth Rollins, Tyler Breeze, and Shawn Spears have done.

‘That’s a dream of mine, yes. But there is already one in Dresden run by Franz Engel, my best friend. Maybe I can get involved and generally imagine a lot, let’s see what happens. One thing is clear: as soon as I am in Germany, I rush back to work. I’ve sat around long enough.’
