Jon Moxley Speaks On Nixed Hell In A Cell Pitch
Jon Moxley is gearing up for his upcoming Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch against AEW World Champion Kenny Omega at next month’s pay-per-view, the first of its kind for a mainstream wrestling promotion in the United States.
Moxley recently spoke with Dave Meltzer and Garret Gonzales on Wrestling Observer Radio, giving his thoughts on the match, revealing it was brought to him by AEW management quite some time ago.
I have things I wanna say about it, and thoughts on this match, and I will say it on Dynamite. I don’t want to put the cart before the horse.” Moxley stated. “I would have never thought in a million years, and obviously, I’m a death match connoisseur, I love watching stuff that will gross people out and make them uncomfortable. To me, it’s a different sport, a different way of doing stuff. As a fan, I’ve seen these exploding deathmatches, with Onita and Terry Funk. Never would have expected in a million years I’d do one in AEW.”
When this was brought to me, quite sometime ago actually, I’m not going to turn that down, hell no.
Moxley also spoke on pitching different ideas during his time in WWE, revealing he wanted to tear the canvas during a Hell In A Cell match, but was met with pushback from Vince McMahon and Triple H. Years later, a similar spot was done during NXT Takeover: Brooklyn IV in a Last Man Standing match between Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano.
“We know exactly what’s going to happen, it’s the same stupid Hell in a Cell match. I felt like I was always overpromising what I was allowed to actually deliver. I’ve pitched so many things over the years, everything imaginable, I have pitched. Something simple like tearing the canvas and exposing the boards. I pitched that for a Hell In A Cell match, and like Hunter and Vince and Seth. I take a box cutter and expose the wood, and they look at me like I’m f–king stupid. They don’t get it all, Vince is like ‘I don’t think people are going to understand it”. They looked at me like I was an idiot. Hunter was rolling his eyes, Vince is confused.”
He also spoke on conversations he had with Tony Khan the way he’s booked, not wanting to undeliver to fans if a special match type is announced.
I made it clear to Tony, don’t put me in these situations, unless you want me to go full on., full tilt. Be careful what you wish for, because I’m not in the business of undelivering promises to people these days.
