Mustafa Ali was originally contacted by the WWE in 2016 as a backup in the Crusweight Classic. He was defeated by Lince Dorado in the first round. Ali then appeared on NXT teaming up with Lince Dorado for the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, but were eliminated by Kota Ibushi and TJ Perkins in the first round.
Mustafa Ali eventually became a member of the 205 Live roster, and competed for the Cruisweight Title against Cedric Alexander at Wrestlemania 34.
