This past January, Christian made his long-awaited return at the WWE Royal Rumble, following a seven-year absence from in-ring competition.

Following his appearance, reports emerged regarding his future status with the company, with plans on him working part-time for the promotion. This apparently is no longer the case, and talks have fallen through.

According to Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc., Christian is currently a free agent, and is not under contract with WWE. Earlier this week, Raj tweeted he was told Christian was under contract with WWE, but apparently, he was under contract only with FOX. This likely was for his work with WWE Backstage, which has since been canceled as a long-term series.

I have learned that Christian is indeed a free agent. He had returned to action at the WWE Royal Rumble this past January after an absence of nearly seven years. There were some ideas discussed between WWE and Christian, and the company was interested in signing him. However, talks apparently fell through.

The major question now is if Christian will be unveiled as the mystery wrestler who is signing a deal with AEW. Tony Khan recently revealed the wrestler was male, and one of his all-time favorites. No confirmation is known at this time whether any talks between AEW and Christian have occurred.

Fightful Select (subscription required) recently reported that those they spoke with at WWE have revealed that Christian has not been backstage as of late at WWE events, and no creative plans were spoken about, at least publicly behind the scenes.

AEW’s Chief Legal officer Megha Parekh recently followed Christian on Instagram (h/t to @sportsbuzzww), but later unfollowed him, leading many to speculate about his immediate future.
