Back in 2018 WWE established the first-ever women’s tag team titles and crowned the first champions (Sasha Banks and Bayley) and that year’s Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.
Since then the belts have been primarily exclusive to the Raw and SmackDown brands, but this past Wednesday saw the current champs, Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler, defend the gold on NXT on USA against this year’s Dusty Classic winners, Raquel Gonzalez and Dakota Kai. The wild back and forth affair saw Jax and Baszler retain, mainly thanks to a controversial decision by WWE’s Adam Pearce. NXT General Manager William Regal later teased a big announcement for next week’s show, with many wondering if the yellow-and-black brand would be getting their own tag championship for the women’s division.
According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter that may be the case, as the publication reports that the current plan as of this moment is to introduce NXT tag team titles.
Advertising recently surfaced for NXT’s next Takeover event during WrestleMania weekend, an event that could possibly crown the first exclusive tag champions to the brand.
Stay tuned.
