Roman Reigns Opens Up About Leukemia Diagnosis

Roman Reigns opened up about his time away from the ring, and his battle with leukemia in WWE’s latest episode of “Chronicle”.

Reigns stated he was diagnosed with CML (Chronic Myeloid Leukemia), which was caught in its early stages following a blood test from WWE medical staff.

The treatment for this type of leukemia isn’t traditional chemotherapy, but rather a pill. Reigns explained “It’s not like taking Advil. It’s nothing like taking radiation and true chemotherapy, but it does have its side effects. It does have its nastiness about it. But at the end of the day, if you’re lucky enough to just take a pill, I think you’re ahead of the game.”

The WWE Chronicle episode shows Reigns training at the WWE Performance Center a week prior to his return.

CML has different stages of remission, so when Reigns stated he was in remission, this could be the early stage.

According to Michael J. Mauro, MD, of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, blood remission can begin after a few weeks, and cytogenic remission can be achieved in a few months.

Most patients generally achieve blood remission in a few weeks and cytogenetic remission in a few months. Doctors look for major molecular remission within the first year or two, and research is under way to see if it’s OK to stop treatment after you’ve been in it for a period of time.
