Lucha Underground may be coming back.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there have been conversations about reviving the former promotion, which ran from 2014-2018 on the El Rey Network. The report notes that the revival would consist of similar ideas as the previous incarnation, but with a different name.
A big reason Lucha Underground was canceled was budget issues that prevented a fifth season, not to mention a number of lawsuits that had talent trapped in exclusive deals preventing them from signing elsewhere once the company went under. Head AAA/LU booker Vampiro told this to Chris Van Vliet regarding a revival back in 2020:
“90% of the roster is in AEW, the other 10% is in WWE. The writers are gone, the production crew is gone, the company is split. I would pretty much put my money on, it’s over and done.”
Lucha Underground introduced fans to a whole new base of wrestlers, including AEW’s Brian Cage, Rey Fenix, Penta El Zero M, Angelico, Jack Evans, and WWE’s Ricochet, Santos Escobar, and more. Major League Wrestling has recently introduced their Azteca Underground concept which plays off of the style that Lucha Underground created, with former Lucha Underground champion Mil Muertes being the face of the faction.
All four seasons of the original Lucha Underground can be found on the Tubi app for free. The last ever LU champion was Jake Hager, with the show’s final image being the introduction of former five-time WWE Intercontinental champion, Wade Barrett.
