The British heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury is such a big character in the ring that a switch into the world of pro wrestling was a seamless one. After much fanfare, the man known as the Gypsy King made his WWE debut in October 2019 at Crown Jewel with a knockout win over Braun Strowman. It was a memorable entrance and a return to the organization is inevitable.
Wrestling options are already on the table for Fury but, with some unfinished business in the boxing ring, his next move is far from certain.
Scot Beckons
A number of WWE legends are eyeing up a tussle with the Gypsy King, who brings a new element to the sport. In wrestling terms, Fury’s next clash is likely to be against Drew McIntyre who has already called out his potential opponent.
McIntyre spoke after defeating Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 36 and, after claiming his first WWE title, he spoke in serious terms about tackling the Englishman. As a Scot, McIntyre would be lining up a true Battle of Britain, but a match up with Fury would be a huge draw Stateside, and it’s the one that the fans seem to want. The Gypsy King has also made it clear that his WWE journey is far from done – but there are other considerations for Fury right now.
Heavyweight Hits
Victory over Deontay Wilder in February 2020 saw Fury claim the WBC, Ring Magazine, and Lineal heavyweight titles. Having initially drawn with the American in December 2018, Fury’s battles with the American were standout bouts and, as a boxer, there is much more to come.
The obvious clash as far as many boxing pundits are concerned is an all-British bout against Anthony Joshua who currently holds the WBA, IBF, WBO, and IBO titles. It would be a close fight to call and, although betting markets may put Fury ahead following Joshua’s shock loss to Andy Ruiz Jr, the tale of the tape makes it difficult to split the two men.
Choices
At the age of 31, Tyson Fury could enjoy a few more years in the ring while unifying some more heavyweight titles. After a spell away from boxing, he’s back, and those that have gained an advantage during his absence are firmly on his radar.
The appeal of WWE is, however, an obvious one and the Gypsy King comes with the theatrical element to his game that will make him a perfect fit. Aside from the Scottish psychopath Drew McIntyre, Fury has no shortage of options when the time comes to switch sports once again. It’s said that the British star was lining up Lesnar himself at Wrestlemania 36 and, while that battle didn’t come to fruition, he remains a potential opponent in the future.
Roman Reigns and Samoa Joe have also been mentioned, while a potential rematch against Braun Strowman has yet to be ruled out. Fury’s appeal to wrestling fans suggests that he may make a permanent switch at some point and, when boxing finally gives way, the WWE will
