Vince McMahon’s XFL has suspended all operations due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
According to ESPN, XFL CEO Jeffery Pollack conducted a 10-minute telephone conference to inform employees of the news
The league has laid off nearly all employees, with only a handful of executives remaining employed. The league reportedly has no plans to return in 2021.
Pollack did not indicate the league was out of business, but strong implications suggest that it is not coming back according to a prominent former XFL staff member who was on the call.
According to a prominent former XFL staffer who was on the call, Pollack stopped short of saying the league was going out of business. But the strong implication was clear. “It’s done,” the staffer said. “It’s not coming back.”
Many within the company believed the league would restart in 2021, with players being told they would be paid through the end of the regular 2020 season, which will end this weekend.
The XFL canceled its 2020 season in March due to the nationwide shutdown, after only playing five games.
The league is owned by WWE chairman and CEO Vince McMahon, who revived the company in 2018, after its initial demise in 2001.
The league has yet to release an official comment.
