The WWF Intercontinental Championship belt Ricky Steamboat won from Randy Savage at WrestleMania III sold for $716,750 at Heritage Auctions on Saturday, October 24.
The sale was part of Heritage Auctions Fall Sports Catalog Auction, which ran October 23 to 25. The final price includes Heritage’s 22 percent buyer’s premium on a winning bid of $587,500.
It is a new record for a wrestling championship belt at auction. The previous record was $414,800 for Hulk Hogan’s WWF Championship belt from WrestleMania 2, which sold at Heritage on August 21.
The belt was owned by Conrad Thompson, who wrote on X after the sale, “We set a record! Thank you!” Thompson has owned the belt since 2020, after trading the original Intercontinental Championship belt worn by Pat Patterson to WWE for it.
Heritage listed the belt as lot 81948. It was used from 1985 to 1988 and was held by four WWE Hall of Famers: Tito Santana, Savage, Steamboat, and The Honky Tonk Man. Savage won the title from Santana in February 1986 and held it for more than a year. Steamboat beat him for it on March 29, 1987, at WrestleMania III at the Pontiac Silverdome. The Honky Tonk Man won the title from Steamboat in June 1987.
The belt did not set the overall record for wrestling memorabilia. That still belongs to Hogan’s boots from the first WrestleMania, which sold for $1,037,000 at Heritage earlier this year. They were the first wrestling item to sell for more than $1 million.
The belt was not the only wrestling lot in the sale. Heritage had 18 wrestling lots in sale 50088 in total. Here is how they played out:
