No Urgency To Bring Sheamus Into AEW
There is an update on Sheamus potentially signing with AEW.
Sheamus became a free agent on October 1 after his WWE contract expired. He had turned down a restructured extension earlier this year.
According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, during a Select Answers Q&A, there does not seem to be a huge urgency in bringing him into AEW, but some names in the company want him there.
"There doesn’t seem to be a huge urgency in bringing him in, but there are some heavy hitters like Claudio Castagnoli and Adam Copeland that have made it clear that they would like him there. Sheamus has had talks with other companies. I don’t know if he’s had direct talks with All Elite Wrestling, but nothing seems imminent."
Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline also noted Sheamus recently asked if he could leave The Big Event NY convention on November 14 early to attend a wedding. November 14 is the same day AEW holds Full Gear. Meltzer described it as, "Might be nothing. Might be something."
Sheamus leaves WWE with a full resume. He is a four-time world champion, winning the WWE Championship three times and the World Heavyweight Championship once. He also held the United States Championship three times and tag team titles five times, and he won the Royal Rumble in 2012, Money in the Bank in 2015, and King of the Ring in 2010.
That is part of why the interest makes sense. Castagnoli was his tag team partner in The Bar in WWE, and Copeland’s last WWE match was against Sheamus. Both men know what he brings in the ring and in a locker room.
For now, there is interest from people inside AEW, and talks with other companies, but no deal and no debut date. If that changes, Full Gear on November 14 will be the date fans watch first, because of the convention note above. That is speculation at this point, not a reported plan.
As of this writing, Sheamus has not signed with AEW.
