Jake Roberts says Tony Khan needs to loosen up the reins a little bit and take some advice, and he believes his AEW talent can be used better.
Roberts made the comments speaking with Nick Teodoro on the Nick Club Wrestling Happy Hour. He was asked about the difference between working for WWE and AEW, and he put creative first. Roberts said, “There’s a lot of differences. Creative number one, no doubt. Tony Khan needs to loosen up the reins a little bit and take some advice. He’s got a good product. He’s got a lot of talent there. I think his talent can be used better. Just my own thoughts. I loved working for Tony Khan. They’ll wish you nothing but the best. He’s a sweet guy.”
Roberts confirmed his departure from All Elite Wrestling in July 2026. He made his official debut for the company in 2020, in the lead up to Lance Archer’s arrival in the promotion. He worked as a manager and on screen presence during his run, most notably alongside Archer.
Elsewhere in the same interview, Roberts said that he has re-signed with WWE. Roberts is a WWE Hall of Famer and one of the most respected talkers of his era, and a return to WWE in some capacity would put him back with the company where he made his name in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The comments are notable because Roberts left AEW on good terms by his own account, praising Khan personally even while criticizing how the creative side is run. He did not say Khan’s product is bad, only that the talent on the roster could be used better than they are.
What is confirmed is Roberts’ comments, his July 2026 AEW departure, and his statement that he has re-signed with WWE. What is not confirmed is what role he will have with WWE, or when he will appear on WWE programming again.
