Not every WWE superstar has managed to pull off cashing in their Money in the Bank contract by taking a world title. Four haven’t come away from the match with the gold, so do you remember these times when wrestlers came up short?

John Cena (2012)

Technically, John Cena won his cash-in match with CM Punk at Raw 1000 but didn’t get the WWE Championship to go with the victory as Big Show interfered and caused a disqualification. This angle set up a triple threat between the three of them for SummerSlam where Punk retained the title.

Cena received a one-on-one rematch at Night Of Champions where he fought The Voice of the Voiceless to a draw. Punk’s then modern-era record of 434 days as WWE champ ended when The Rock defeated him at the 2013 Royal Rumble.

Damien Sandow (2013)

The only time a Money in the Bank contract holder has lost their cash-in match clean was Damien Sandow. Now known under his old wrestling name, Aron Stevens (in the NWA), the briefcase is supposed to be something that gives superstars an edge. That wasn’t the case here as World Heavyweight champion Cena hit Sandow with the AA for the 1-2-3 on an October episode of Raw to avenge being attacked during a promo.

The unpredictability of WWE and the characters that the wrestlers represent in person as well as online through social media and other online platforms has allowed it to successfully transition into the modern age as a major entertainment product. Similarly, the casino industry has managed to successfully navigate its way through easy accessibility and enticing welcome offers among other features to become an entertainment juggernaut. The heavy competition means it can be hard to find the right casino but there are some sites which are a good place to find your next bonus as they do all the hard work for you and suggest the best option.

Baron Corbin (2017)

WWE’s reigning King of the Ring didn’t follow-up on his Money in the Bank success of 2017 when losing to Jinder Mahal in what was very much an experimental year for the company.

Corbin cashed in the contract on an episode of SmackDown Live in August only to be distracted by Cena after initially interfering in a match between Big Match John and the Modern Day Maharaja. Turnabout was fair play.

Although Corbin is yet to hold a world title in WWE, he has got over really well as a despised heel. As King of the Ring, he is part of an elite club that sees him mentioned in the same breath as legends like Bret Hart, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Triple H and Edge.

Braun Strowman (2018)

This one takes some explaining. WWE has rather ripped up all previous canon to do with Hell in a Cell matches in recent years – see the Seth Rollins vs The Fiend Bray Wyatt bout from 2019 for further evidence of that.

Braun Strowman became Mr Monster in the Bank when claiming the briefcase in 2018. He announced he would challenge new WWE Universal champ Roman Reigns at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view inside Satan’s structure just a month after The Big Dog dethroned Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam.

Despite a storied history of falls from and through the cage, Lesnar’s interference in this title bout between Strowman and Reigns – complete with advocate Paul Heyman pepper-spraying special guest referee Mick Foley to incapacitate the Hardcore Legend – resulted in another official ruling this cash-in to be a no contest.

The Monster Among Men has since become the Universal champion, though, subbing for Reigns against Hall of Famer and two-time titleholder Bill Goldberg at WrestleMania 36.
