WWE has terminated upwards of 70 employees this week, with the most notable being Gerald Brisco, working for the company since 1984. Brisco took to Twitter Thursday revealing a phone call he received from Vince McMahon stating he was no longer needed.
Dave Meltzer revealed in the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the decision was made to not bring back a large number of employees who were furloughed this past April. The categories hit the hardest were live event producers, production managers, and people who worked in travel, merchandise and other aspects of live events.
“As many as 70 people let go this past week in decisions made largely regarding not bringing back those furloughed at the time. Categories hit the hardest were live event producers, production managers, and those who worked in other aspects of live events, merchandise and travel.”
The belief is once WWE is allowed to began producing shows with full arenas, the live event business will drastically change. WWE house shows will likely continue, but only in major arenas, and not several times a week.
There is some bitterness from those who were furloughed back in April, with return dates constantly being pushed back. The company has brought back some employees over the last few months, with the majority officially let go this week.
