According to Deadline, American Gladiators is making a return.
The report states that MGM is partnering up with WWE for a reboot of the classic television program, which originally premiered in 1989, and will see several of your favorite WWE stars participating in the non-scripted series.
“Mark Burnett and his team are currently pitching the rebooted series, which is based on the format created by Johnny Ferraro and Dan Carr, to broadcasters and platforms.”
There is also a documentary covering American Gladiators being released by Vice Studios and ESPN for their signature “30 For 30” series, but that does not seem to be related to this new reboot featuring WWE.
As previously mentioned the original American Gladiators aired from 1989-1996, but the program has seen many adaptations since its original inception. WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan was one of the hosts of the series reboot back in 2008 for NBC along with Laila Ali. Actor and producer Seth Rogen, along with partner Evan Goldberg, attempted to reboot the series in 2018 but the remake never made it to broadcast.
MGM and WWE will serve as executive producers on this new American Gladiators project. There is currently no news on when filming could begin for the series, or which Superstars will be involved. Stay tuned, and check out the complete Deadline report here.
