Yesterday evening the WWE announced that John Cena was injured the previous week on RAW during the Fatal 4-Way Match.
Shortly after the announcement, reports surfaced that the “injury” was part of an angle, which could further a feud with John Cena and Drew McIntyre.
The WWE locker room was just as surprised as fans with the injury news. According to Mike Johnson at PWInsider Elite, the talent backstage were curious whether John Cena was actually hurt.
Since John Cena is not at RAW every week, they weren’t surprised that he wasn’t backstage at Oklahoma City’s Chesapeake Energy Arena.
The previous week on RAW, talent who were spoken with had no indication that John Cena was injured during the Fatal 4-Way Match.
The injury angle could be related to Cena’s new movie, which begins shooting the first week of February outside of Vancouver, BC.
In the past, movie studios did not allow talent to compete so close to filming, due to an incident with The Rock where he was injured at Wrestlemania 29 ahead of filming of the movie Hercules.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that at one point Lars Sullivan was scheduled to attack John Cena, setting up a match between the two at Wrestlemania 35.
Lars Sullivan is current on a leave of absence due to anxiety issues, and it’s unknown when hw will finally debut on the main roster.
