What Is WWE Day 1?
First of all, let’s get to grips with what this entails. The WWE Day 1 event in 2022, in which we saw some pretty gruesome injuries, was a live event which aired on pay-per-view and live-streamed via the WWE Network across the globe. Taking place on New Year’s Day, it was officially the first ever WWE event to take place at this time since they held the New Year’s Revolution way back in ’07. The event took place in Atlanta, Georgia, at the State Farm Arena, and will also be the location of the event in 2023, too. The event was first announced on July 23rd 2021, and was titled Day 1 due to being held on New Year’s Day.
What Is The Day 1 Storyline?
A number of storylines ran throughout the first Day 1 event, but one, in particular, focused on Raw’s Seth Rollins, who was the number one contender for the WWE Championship, and his rivalry with Kevin Owens, who unexpectedly and arguably unfairly, would be added to the title match-up if he won a fight against Big E. Of course, Rollins interfered with the match between Owens and Big E, resulting in Owens winning by disqualification reasons. A few more wrestlers entered the mix, too, making the climax of the championship bout, which took place on Day 1, a fatal five-way match. Edge also returned from his time away in November 2021 and listed a number of people he had yet to fight; after a number of threats and heated exchanges, Edge was challenged by The Miz, and they faced off during the Day 1 event.
Which Wrestlers Took Part?
Alongside the wrestlers listed above, a number of other wrestlers took part in the lengthy event. These included Bobby Lashley, who attacked Big E, Owens and Rollins following a steel cage match and subsequently demanded to be included in the Day 1 championship match. Also, Brock Lesnar, a free agent and former UFC fighter, was added to the fatal five-way to replace Roman Reigns, who had tested positive for Covid-19 and couldn’t partake. The Day 1 event also saw Liv Morgan face off against Becky Lynch following the Raw Women’s Championship fight in the month beforehand, in which Becky kept her title. The fight that took place on Day 1 was a rematch after Morgan accused Lynch of cheating in their championship fight.
Who Was Tipped To Win?
Those outside the wrestling world may find it odd that anyone can bet on an event that is scripted. Edge was tipped as being the favourite to win against The Miz, and Becky Lynch was arguably the favourite when it came to hanging onto her title vs Morgan, and as predicted, she came through. In regards to the fatal five-way match, Big E was tipped as being the favourite to win, although there wasn’t much in it, and it was well-agreed that it could have ended many different ways. And in fact, it did, with the unexpected newcomer, Brock Lesnar, who wasn’t even meant to be taking part, winning the championship altogether. What Was The Aftermath?
Brock Lesnar shocked the Day 1 2022 crowd by wiping the floor with the other four fighters. The results of Day 1 led to interesting aftermath for both Raw and SmackDown wrestlers. On Raw, it was revealed that the new WWE champ Lesnar would face his first opponent to challenge him for the title. When Is Day 1, 2023 And What Can We Expect?
As is to be expected, Day 1 2023 will take place on New Year’s Day next year, and quite frankly, who knows what we can expect. The run-up to 2023 will likely be filled with countless shocks and surprise bouts, with events taking place over the course of November and December, likely setting the stage for the next Day 1 event. What we can predict, however, is that this will be yet another event filled with drama, unexpected results, and exciting action to pave the way for a new year filled with great fights. It’s important to note that Brock Lesnar features heavily in the promotional material of the Day 1 show, suggesting he’ll play a big part. It’s also worth remembering that Big E suffered a broken neck live on SmackDown and will likely not be taking part in any form of wrestling, at least until after his scans which are said to take place in March 2023.
