Cena posted an apology video in Mandarin on his official Weibo account, a popular Chinese social media platform.

“I made a mistake. I love and respect China and Chinese people,” Cena stated in the 1-minute video.

The apology video, which has thousands of shares and comments, further angered users.

“John if you do love and respect China from your heart you say “Taiwan is a part of China”,or your apology is totally meaningless and you’ll never get rid of this. There is the price you can’t afford. Just don’t mess with us,” said one commenter.

China claims Taiwan as its sovereign territory, despite it being a self-governed island. Government officials believe suggesting its independence “crossing the line”. You can read more here.

Fast & Furious 9 was released in several overseas countries over the weekend, the biggest opening of any Hollywood blockbuster since the beginning of the pandemic.

WWE has been in talks with Cena to appear at the July 16 episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
