Orange Cassidy wants to be in this year’s AEW Continental Classic.
Cassidy spoke about the tournament during a new interview with STL Sports Central. The Continental Classic is entering its fourth year as a tournament in AEW, and it is run in a round robin format. Cassidy, one of the company’s original stars, said he would like to be in it this year if given the opportunity.
“You see, that’s the thing. I don’t really think too far ahead and I don’t ask too far ahead. I just show up and they tell me what to do. The Continental Classic is nice because you kind of know what the deal is, you know, I don’t have to think too much. I just know what, what I’m doing, what match I’m wrestling. So, I would like to be in it,” Cassidy said.
The appeal for Cassidy is simple. In a round robin tournament, the format is set in advance, and each wrestler knows the matches ahead of them. That fits the way Cassidy says he approaches his career, showing up and doing what he is told rather than planning far ahead or asking for specific spots.
Cassidy has been part of AEW since the company started, and he remains one of its most recognizable acts. A spot in the Continental Classic would put him back in a featured tournament setting, with a clear path of matches rather than a single one off bout.
Elsewhere in the same interview, Cassidy also spoke about his theme song situation in AEW, but the tournament was the clearest statement of what he wants next.
What is confirmed is what Cassidy said, and that he wants a spot in this year’s tournament. What is not confirmed is whether he will actually be in the field, as no spot for him has been announced, and AEW has not confirmed the full lineup for this year’s Continental Classic.
